Episode 28 · Season 2 · The Wellness Path Podcast · July 1, 2026 · Hosted by Dr. Vic Manzo, DC
Your nervous system controls every process in your body — heart rate, digestion, hormones, immunity, mood, focus, recovery — and most people have never had it measured. In this season opener, Dr. Vic Manzo explains NeuroSync: what it means for both sides of the brain to communicate efficiently, how The Wellness Path measures seven regions of the nervous system through a hands-on functional neurological exam, and why symptoms are always the last thing to appear rather than the first.
The line most listeners remember: “Symptoms are always the last to appear. By the time pain, fatigue and anxiety show up, there’s been a decade or more of underlying dysregulation building underneath.”
What You’ll Learn in This Episode
- What NeuroSync actually means — and why hemispheric communication sits underneath sleep, focus, digestion and mood
- Why symptoms are the last thing to appear — the nervous system compensates for years before you feel anything
- What a subluxation really is — a software issue affecting the hardware, not a marketing term
- How we measure it — the seven regions of the NeuroSync Efficiency Index, scored from Critical to Optimal
- Why “my child grew out of it” isn’t the same as resolved — compensation is not correction
- What parents report most — sleep and mood, ahead of the symptom they came in for
- Why stress isn’t the problem — how your nervous system responds to it is
The Seven Centers We Measure
- Brainstem — the automatic centre; arousal, alertness and survival function
- Vestibular system — balance, spatial awareness, knowing where the body is
- Autonomic system — the balance between stress response and recovery
- Left cerebellum and right cerebellum — coordination and motor timing
- Left cortex and right cortex — higher functions, focus and regulation
Each region is scored on a five-tier scale from Critical to Optimal, producing a single NeuroSync Efficiency Index score. No scanner, no imaging — the assessment is hands-on.

A New Season, and a Word Your Doctor Has Probably Never Used
Hey everyone, welcome back to a new season and a new episode of The Wellness Path Podcast. I’m your host, Dr. Vic, and I’m excited to start fresh. We’ve been working behind the scenes looking at what we want this podcast to be — the approach, the vision, the purpose. We’ve been at it for the last month or two, and we’ve created a roadmap of where we’re going.
We’re going to share 52 episodes this season, going in depth on all of them, with interviews on top of that. Before we get started, check out the show notes — there’s a ton of free resources in there. More importantly, subscribe to the podcast. And if you enjoy this episode, send a text to someone you know who could benefit from hearing it.
Today I want to share what we do at The Wellness Path with something called NeuroSync. This is probably a word your doctor has never used before. It’s why brain-body communication is the missing measurement in modern healthcare.
Imagine a version of your body where sleep actually restores you. Where stress moves through you instead of getting stuck. Where your focus becomes natural and pain doesn’t linger for months. That body is not a fantasy. It’s what happens when your nervous system is in NeuroSync — when everything is communicating properly.
And most of you listening have never had that truly measured.
Everything Runs on One Network
I was literally talking to a potential patient about this. Every single system in your body — your heart rate, your digestion, your hormones, your immunity, your mood, your focus, your recovery, your oxygen levels — I could go on and on. Life itself runs on one specific network. Your nervous system.
When communication between brain and body is clear and symmetrical — meaning both sides of your brain are balanced and communicating as well as they should — you experience what we call NeuroSync. There are other terms for this, like hemispheric synchronization. I call it NeuroSync to keep it simple, because neuro means brain and nervous system.
When it’s interrupted, when things aren’t communicating as well as they should, in chiropractic we call this a subluxation.
Let me clarify the word. It comes from the Latin — sub, meaning under or less than, and luxare, to dislocate. Structurally it describes a joint that isn’t sitting or moving the way it should. But the way I think about it clinically goes further than the joint. When that segment isn’t moving properly, you’re not expressing your full potential. There’s a limitation on what your nervous system can do.
We understand — and this may sound esoteric, but this is backed by science — that we are truly light bodies. The Vedics knew this thousands of years ago. Science has since shown that our bodies actually emit light, and we know now that light can carry information. Why am I sharing that? Because it relates to what chiropractic was talking about when it first started. I’m not saying that’s how it all came out. But it’s the essence of understanding that when we don’t have full expression of things happening the way they should, our light is dimmed a little.
Where the Interference Comes From
Then chronic stress kicks in, and so much more. And this doesn’t just come from chronic stress. There are birth traumas — that’s one of the biggest ones. In my studies as a certified pediatric chiropractor, we know now it’s not just trauma from birth. We used to say that all the time. It’s actually even before. There’s something called imprints on the nervous system, and it happens from the moment of conception. How that all works is a whole new field we’re still trying to understand.
Then you have repetitive posture, repetitive movements, repetitive stressors, old injuries. Every downstream system starts to compensate. It all comes from the nervous system down.
That’s why some people say, “I have digestive issues, what supplement should I take? What homeopathic should I do?” I’m not against those things — I think they’re great and I recommend a lot of them. But the nervous system is usually the cause for a lot of it.
I have a patient who had chronic digestive issues, throwing up. She couldn’t enjoy dinners, couldn’t go out, because as soon as the food came she’d have to get up and throw up. Long story short, in a short period of time — without adding supplements or anything like that — she hasn’t been throwing up since she started care. Nervous system first, before anything else.
“I Feel Fine” Is Not the Same as Functioning Well
So you don’t feel broken yet. You just feel a little off. You don’t have pain per se. Patients say to me, “Well, I feel good, so I could probably space out care.” I understand the logic. And I say: if you’re waiting until you have symptoms or feel like you need an adjustment, that’s the same as waiting until the fire alarm goes off in your house and then saying, “I’ve got a fire, let me put it out” — without understanding what’s causing the fire, or working on preventing it in the first place.
So you feel off, and then you’re diagnosed with something. And this is where most people live, especially in America. You get a diagnosis, and most of the time medication comes behind it. The United States is about 4% of the world’s population and accounts for roughly half of global pharmaceutical spending.
How We Actually Measure It
So going back to NeuroSync — it’s measurable. It’s not a metaphor. We measure it through a hands-on functional neurological exam.
I’m assessing how efficiently seven regions of your nervous system are working: your brainstem, your vestibular system, your autonomic system, and both sides of your cerebellum and cortex. Eye tracking, balance, coordination, respiratory function, reflex testing. When we put that all together, it gives us your NeuroSync Efficiency Index — your NEI score. It’s a single number representing your nervous system state overall, and each of those seven regions is scored on a five-tier scale from Critical to Optimal.
The score tells me severity. It tells me how significant what we have going on is. That doesn’t tell me the cause or all the other factors — just the severity. Then we look at what’s going on with the brain, and which specific areas aren’t firing correctly, because your left and right brain control things in different ways.
I love when patients have been to chiropractors for years, or have been to chiropractors who said they were neuro-focused, and they come in and say, “Wow, I’ve never had that assessed. That was in-depth.” And I’m not bashing chiropractors — we just do things differently. I did have a patient who didn’t want to start care because she felt it was too much. She said, “This is way too in-depth.” And I said, okay, that’s totally up to you. I don’t judge.
So we look at the higher functions of the brain, the middle part of the brain, the brainstem. We look at your vestibular system. We look at your autonomic system. We’re looking to see what’s communicating, what’s online, what’s offline, what’s not tracking correctly.
How’s your internal GPS doing? Does your brain really know where your body is in space? Does it even know? Because if things aren’t calibrating properly, it leads to other things down the road.
If my shoulder doesn’t move in proper motion, my body adapts with muscle imbalances. Eventually, if I don’t take care of those, I may have pain — because those imbalances affect tendons, which can lead to tendinitis, tendon tears down the road, ligament issues, maybe a tear in the glenohumeral joint. There are so many factors that can show up. And that’s just physical. I’m not even into all the other stuff.
It can be other things too. Sometimes parents will say, well, my child has some primitive reflexes showing up and some other neurodevelopmental deficits. And they’ll say, “Yeah, but little Johnny’s bedwetting issues are all gone. I think we’re good.” And I’ll say — there’s neurodevelopmental work still to do. If you don’t correct that and get that alignment, down the road it shows up in other ways. It always does.
This isn’t to create fear. I don’t do scare care. I’m just sharing that if things aren’t functioning or communicating well, any system in life that doesn’t communicate well will break down. It’s just a matter of time. Relationships are the best example, because we all have them. If you have miscommunication in a relationship — in a marriage — and you don’t correct it, it’s just a matter of time. Things are going to break down eventually. It’s inevitable.
Symptoms Are Always the Last to Appear
When it comes to health, symptoms are always the last thing to appear. Especially pain. That’s why you can’t go off pain alone.
I always tell patients: chiropractic doesn’t treat anything. We don’t treat any condition, illness, symptom, or disease. There’s nothing we do as a chiropractor where we adjust a neck and say we can help neck pain. As a coach for chiropractors, I try to define that clearly, because you get caught in the pain cycle — patient has pain here, adjust there, it’ll feel better.
Can an adjustment in that area make someone feel better? Yes. You’re stimulating neurology and movement. But is that adjustment only doing that? No. When you do a treatment, it’s specific and focused, and that’s medical. Chiropractic is holistic. So we’re making a specific adjustment.
Your nervous system will compensate for many, many years before you feel anything. By the time pain, fatigue and anxiety start to show up, there’s been a huge underlying dysregulation building for a decade or more.
This is why people say “I feel fine, everything’s great” — and then the next day they have a heart attack. Not to be extreme, but the nervous system was in trouble for a long time before the body said anything.
These are studies going back to 1988. This is called stress adaptation and disease — known as allostasis and allostatic load. We did a podcast on what allostasis is.
When I used to do x-rays in my office, I’d educate patients on this. If they saw arthritis in their neck, they’d say, “That’s why I have neck pain.” And I’d say, I wouldn’t call it the cause — but I’ll tell you this has been going on for the last seven to fifteen years, because research shows that’s how long it takes for arthritis to become visible on an x-ray. Just barely visible. So this is a process. Turning the corner takes time too.
That’s the thing about chiropractic. I don’t know how long it’s going to take. I know where we’re going, but I don’t know how long the process will be to get there. And I don’t get hung up on that. I’m more interested in what progress we see along the way. What neurology is starting to change? How is this nervous system starting to shift? Those are the things I focus on.
A Software Issue Affecting the Hardware
You have to understand — a subluxation is a software issue that affects the hardware. It’s a structural disruptor. Posture is one of the most visible clinical signs. I can line up a hundred people and find postural imbalances and compensation patterns in all of them, because we all have this in some way, shape or form.
There’s research using EEG and somatosensory evoked potentials — somato meaning body, sensory meaning the sensing parts — looking at whether correcting spinal dysfunction changes brain function. Specifically in the prefrontal cortex, which governs focus, decision making, motor control, and autonomic regulation.
Subluxation is not a marketing term. It’s a measurable interference in the sensory-motor integration that holds your nervous system together.
I love the neuroplasticity study that came out in 2016, because chiropractors had been talking about this for years. We teach it as raising people’s consciousness levels and making them more human.
Here is what that study actually did. Researchers used EEG source localisation to look at what happened after a single session of spinal manipulation in adults with subclinical neck pain. They found the prefrontal source activity changed by about 20% — measured as a reduction in the N30 evoked potential, which in this research is interpreted as a shift in how the brain integrates sensory and motor information.
It is worth saying plainly what it was and was not. It was nineteen participants, one session, and it measured cortical processing rather than a clinical outcome. It does not show that an adjustment makes the prefrontal cortex work 20% better. What it does show is that a single adjustment measurably changed prefrontal processing — which, when you consider the prefrontal cortex governs focus, decision making, motor control and autonomic regulation, is a genuinely interesting finding.[1]
When I read that study, I was just shifting toward pediatrics and becoming a certified pediatric chiropractor. And I thought — you’re telling me we may be able to support autonomic regulation and help build that prefrontal cortex?
Imagine a kid — and this is true in humans generally — whose brain is mostly firing stress, worry, fear and anxiety. That’s what our brains are always scanning for. It fires that pattern constantly and wires it into the body, creating a chain reaction. Compare that to someone with good autonomic regulation who isn’t having that as much. They stay more balanced. They can handle stress.
And remember, stress is not bad. We’d be dead without stress. We need stress. Stress isn’t the issue. How your nervous system responds to stress is the issue. That’s what you need to look at.
The Goal Is Not the Symptom
The goal for adults is not to reduce pain. The goal for kids is not to stop bedwetting, or ADHD, or autism, or developmental delays, speech delays, constipation, colic, plagiocephaly, torticollis — I can go on and on. It’s not to correct those things. It’s to restore the system.
That’s the main focus of chiropractic. Pain or any symptom is a byproduct of not being in NeuroSync. It’s not the target. When your nervous system is communicating cleanly, symptoms often resolve on their own. I’m not going to say chiropractic is the be-all and end-all. But I will tell you what I’ve seen in my experience.
I’ve seen patients with kids who have autism doing everything you could possibly imagine. Heavy metal detoxing. Parasite detoxing. Mold cleansing. Gut testing with specific probiotics designed for their child at $120 a month. All the supplements they’ve heard are great. And I love these moms, because they’re doing everything they can with the information they have — whether from mom groups, crunchy mom groups, wherever.
And yet they’re seeing progress, but it’s really slow. And I tell these moms: you’re doing everything right. We’re just going to get to what’s holding it back, creating that bottleneck for your child’s health. And then when we start chiropractic care, three or four months in, it’s like they’ve seen results they’ve never seen before.
Some kids are like this. I’m not going to say all of them are. Every kid is on their own journey. Every adult — your health journey is your individual journey.
Everyone’s Timeline Is Their Own
The question I always get is, “Doc, when will I be out of pain?” or “When do you think this will resolve?” My younger self wanted to give people an answer. I’d say, well, you should be right here, in this time frame. I didn’t really respect or understand that everyone is on their own individual journey.
Health is an individual process. I had to look at this through a different lens, just like I do in coaching. Someone will say, “I heard you helped so-and-so get to this level in a short period of time.” And I’ll say, yes — that was for them. I don’t know where you are. There’s a lot of work we have to get through. We could see it in four months, we could see it in eight months, we could see it in two years, we might see it in four years. I don’t know the journey. My goal is to help you do everything in your power to make it a reality.
The same is true in health. It’s about staying consistent. The body loves consistency. Neurology follows consistency. What you do consistently is what it wires to. That’s the law of nature. Look at nature — it does things very consistently. The universe does things very consistently.
That’s why it’s not about the symptoms. It’s not about the pain. It’s about getting that neurology balanced. And that resolves things you didn’t even know were connected to your spine.
A lot of times adults will say, “Doc, I’m sleeping better.” Or the kids sleep better. The infants sleep better. “My mood’s been better.” Honestly, sleep and mood are the two things I hear most from parents. “My kid is sleeping really well. And their mood — they’re just happy. They regulate. I don’t know how to explain it. Just a happy kid.” And I’m like, yep. That’s the two right there. Digestion, immunity, hormones — this is what neurological chiropractic care is all about.
When we assess, we look at the nervous system first, because it’s the control system. You always want to look at the controls. Usually if something’s off, it’s the control system. Then you go from there to everything else.
Where to Start
In our office we have what we call Discovery Day, which is the NeuroFoundation Assessment. It’s the full hands-on functional neurological exam, all the brain testing we do, and the primitive reflex screening — mostly primitives on the kids, then postural reflexes. We look at posture. We look at sensitization of your nervous system. There’s a lot we look at to get a full picture of what’s going on and the approach we’ll take.
From day one we understand that. Then on day two we get into it — here’s what we found, here’s what makes sense of what you have going on, here’s the work we recommend, here are the other systems or services we’ll bring in alongside it. First, to get you out of that state as fast as possible, which I call stabilizing the nervous system. Then to start integrating new patterns and go from there.
So if you’ve never had your nervous system measured — start there. Everything else in healthcare is downstream from that.
I hope you enjoyed the first episode of this new season. If you’ve never listened before and this is your first time, make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss an episode. We have a whole array of topics we’re diving into this season, and I’m looking forward to bringing about fifty-two of them. Now we’re down to fifty-one.
If you enjoyed this and it stirred something up, or you have questions, reach out to us. Our email is in the show notes. And if you know someone who could benefit from this, send them a text with the link so they can listen.
I want to thank you for tuning in, as always. And always remember — an optimized brain equals an optimized life. I’ll see you on the next one.
