Pediatric Chiropractic for Kids, Toddlers & Tweens in East Tennessee | The Wellness Path
What to Expect at Your Child’s First Pediatric Chiropractic Visit
Your child seems healthy — or maybe they’re dealing with something that hasn’t been fully explained. Either way, you want to understand what actually happens when you bring a child to a pediatric chiropractic clinic focused on neurological health.
At The Wellness Path, we don’t guess. Every evaluation is thorough, age-appropriate, and designed to understand the underlying neurological and structural patterns contributing to your child’s challenges — not just focus on symptoms alone. Here’s exactly what to expect.
Families Commonly Bring Their Children to Us For
- ADHD and focus challenges
- Sensory processing difficulties
- Behavioral and emotional regulation struggles
- Sleep dysregulation
- Anxiety and stress patterns
- Coordination and developmental concerns
- Postural and neurological tension
- General nervous system support and development
Your First Visit: Step by Step
First Visit: 30–45 minutes | Day 2 (Report of Findings): 15–20 minutes
Step 1 — In-Depth Health History & Consultation
Dr. Vic starts with a parent consultation — not a clipboard of checkboxes, but a real conversation. The intake form captures birth history, developmental timeline, any previous diagnoses, therapies your child is currently in (OT, speech, PT), school performance, sleep, behavior patterns, and what’s prompted the visit.
You’re welcome to bring notes or reports from other professionals if you have them — it adds to the picture. Everything we learn here gives us the “why” behind what we’re seeing.
Step 2 — Neuro Foundational Assessment
This is where The Wellness Path’s approach separates from a standard chiropractic visit. Dr. Vic performs a detailed neurological assessment aimed at understanding what’s happening in the software of the body — the brain and nervous system — not just the structure.
What is a Brain Gap?
As children grow, certain neurological patterns — specifically primitive reflexes — should naturally “turn off” at predictable developmental stages. When they don’t, the brain is carrying programs it should have outgrown. What Dr. Vic refers to as a brain gap: the child’s chronological age and their brain’s functional development aren’t matching up.
The Neuro Foundational Assessment evaluates:
- Primitive reflex integration — Have early reflexes turned off like they should?
- Posture reflexes — What is the body’s automatic response to balance and gravity?
- Left and right brain development — Is there a measurable weakness on one side? This affects behavior, learning, coordination, and more.
- Neurological firing patterns — Is the brain communicating efficiently, or are there signs of inefficient neurological communication?
Step 3 — INSiGHT Neurological Scans (Age-Based)
The technology we use varies based on your child’s age. All scans are completely non-invasive, painless, and safe.
Under age 5: Thermal Scan — infrared mapping of nerve communication along the spine.
Age 5 and up: Thermal Scan + Surface EMG (CLA) measuring neuromuscular tension and symmetry + Heart Rate Variability (HRV) assessing nervous system adaptability and stress load.
Step 4 — Cranial Assessment
Dr. Vic also performs a cranial evaluation — examining how the bones of the skull are positioned and moving. This is particularly relevant for children with developmental or sensory challenges, as cranial mechanics directly influence nervous system function.
Step 5 — Chiropractic Exam
The final component is a chiropractic examination of the spine and posture, guided by the neurological findings — so every assessment is purposeful and precise.
Day 2 — Your Report of Findings (15–20 minutes)
Dr. Vic analyzes all findings between visits and presents a complete picture on Day 2: what was found, left/right brain analysis, the specific NeuroSync protocols for your child, frequency of care, any additional services indicated, and investment — all clearly outlined.
About the Adjustment
For toddlers and older children, Dr. Vic primarily uses the Integrator — a precise, low-force instrument that delivers a specific neurological input to the spine without any twisting, cracking, or manipulation. If needed, an Activator may also be used. Adjustments also include neuro proprioception work — specific movements and neurological inputs that reinforce the brain-body connection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is chiropractic care safe for kids?
Yes — pediatric chiropractic, performed by a certified practitioner, is safe and gentle. Dr. Vic holds CACCP certification through the ICPA. The techniques used for children are entirely different from adult adjustments — instrument-based, low-force, and tailored to the child’s size and nervous system.
Will my child be scared or feel pain?
Most kids are curious and relaxed. The instruments we use make a small clicking sound and deliver a gentle, precise input — there’s no twisting, cracking, or popping. Many children fall asleep during their first adjustment. We never rush, and we always go at your child’s pace.
What is a “brain gap” and why does it matter?
A brain gap is the difference between a child’s chronological age and where their neurological development actually is. It shows up when primitive reflexes — early brain programs that should naturally switch off at certain milestones — are still active when they shouldn’t be. This can affect behavior, attention, coordination, sensory processing, emotional regulation, and learning. Finding and addressing it is foundational.
My child doesn’t have back pain. Why would they need a chiropractor?
Neurologically-focused chiropractic isn’t primarily about pain. It’s about how well the brain and nervous system are functioning. Many of the children we see come in for attention difficulties, sensory sensitivities, sleep problems, behavioral patterns, developmental delays, or simply a parent’s instinct that something is off.
What are primitive reflexes and why do they need to turn off?
Primitive reflexes are automatic neurological programs essential in the first months of life. As the brain matures, they become “integrated” — essentially turned off — as higher brain functions take over. When they persist beyond their developmental window, they interfere with more complex functions. Think of it like software running in the background that’s slowing everything else down.
What does “left/right brain weakness” mean?
The left and right hemispheres handle different functions and need to develop in balance. When one side consistently underperforms, it creates patterns in behavior, attention, learning, coordination, and emotional regulation. Identifying which side has a weakness — and why — allows us to build a care plan that specifically targets it.
What does the adjustment look like for a child?
Primarily instrument-based — we use the Integrator or Activator, which are small handheld devices that deliver a gentle, precise neurological input. There is no cracking, twisting, or manipulation. We also incorporate neuro proprioception work to reinforce the brain-body connection.
How often will my child need to come?
Frequency is based on what we find in your child’s evaluation — their age, how significant the brain gap is, and what their nervous system needs. Dr. Vic will go over the specific recommendation in full on Day 2.
How long is the first visit?
Day 1 is 30–45 minutes. Day 2 (Report of Findings) is 15–20 minutes.
