How Chiropractic Care Helps Infant Reflux and Gas
Gentle Neurological Care for Infant Reflux and Digestive Discomfort — The Wellness Path · Knoxville · Maryville · Morristown TennesseeInfant reflux — the spitting up, arching after feeds, discomfort during and after eating, and the disrupted sleep that comes with it — is one of the most common challenges parents bring to us in the first weeks and months of life. Most families have been told it is normal, that the baby will grow out of it, or that medication is the answer.
Infant reflux and gas — the arching, spitting up, crying after feeds, and visible digestive distress that makes the early months so difficult — have a neurological source that chiropractic care directly addresses. The vagus nerve, which governs the digestive system including esophageal sphincter tone and gut motility, is frequently compromised by upper cervical subluxation from birth. Restoring that neurological pathway is what produces the most reliable and lasting resolution.
Medication reduces the acid. It does not restore the vagal tone. The moment the medication stops, the pattern returns — because the neurological source has not been addressed. We address the source.
What We Look For
Upper Cervical Subluxation and Vagal Tone
The vagus nerve exits the cranium through the jugular foramen at the cranial base — a space directly influenced by upper cervical alignment. Birth compression at C1 and C2 can restrict this pathway, reducing the parasympathetic signal the vagus delivers to the entire digestive tract. Restoring upper cervical alignment is the primary intervention for vagal tone recovery in infants with reflux.
Cranial Base Restriction
The cranial base houses the origins of the vagus nerve and several cranial nerves involved in swallowing, sucking, and digestive coordination. Compression or restriction at the cranial base from birth forces directly affects these cranial nerve pathways and the digestive function they govern.
Thoracic Involvement
The thoracic spinal segments supply the sympathetic nerves to the stomach and upper digestive tract. When thoracic subluxation is present — creating excessive sympathetic tone — gastric acid production is dysregulated and gastric emptying is slowed. Thoracic correction alongside upper cervical work addresses both the parasympathetic and sympathetic sides of the digestive neurological picture.
What to Expect From Care
- Reduction in the frequency and volume of spitting up after feeds
- Improved comfort during and after feeding — less arching, less distress
- Better gas passage and reduced abdominal bloating and cramping
- Improved sleep as digestive discomfort reduces
- Calmer overall behavior as the digestive discomfort driving irritability reduces
