Chiropractic Care and Your Autonomic Nervous System — What We Look For

How we assess the system that runs your stress response, digestion, and recovery

Your autonomic nervous system is the part of you that runs without being asked. Heart rate. Breathing. Digestion. Immune tone. How quickly you shift out of stress and back into rest and repair. You do not think about any of it — which is exactly why it is so easy to miss when it stops working well.

Why Autonomic Regulation Matters

The autonomic system has two sides: the accelerator (sympathetic, your stress response) and the brake (parasympathetic, your recovery mode). A healthy system moves fluidly between them — ramping up when you need to perform, settling down when the demand passes.

When that flexibility is lost, people describe it in remarkably consistent ways: wired but tired, slow to recover from stress, digestive issues, disrupted sleep, a body that will not settle down. The pattern shows up long before anything appears on a standard test.

How We Assess It — and Why You Feel It

We do not plug you into a machine and hand you a printout. We test the system directly, through a hands-on functional neurological exam — and you experience the findings in real time rather than being asked to trust a number on a screen.

For the autonomic system specifically, that includes:

  • How you breathe — whether your system is stuck in a stress pattern or able to settle.
  • How quickly you respond — a fast, direct check of how your system reacts and recovers.
  • How cleanly signals travel — whether messages are getting through the system efficiently.

Alongside the other checks we run, these findings become part of your NeuroSync Efficiency Index (NEI) — a percentage score for each of seven regions of the brain and nervous system, including the autonomic system itself.

Why the Upper Neck Matters Here

The upper cervical spine sits at the junction between the brainstem and the rest of the body — the region most directly involved in autonomic control. Specific, gentle adjusting in this area is a core part of how we work to reduce interference and support better regulation.

This is also why our adjustments are low-force and specific rather than aggressive. The goal is not to move something as far as possible; it is to give the nervous system a clear enough signal to reorganize.

What Changes Look Like

As autonomic regulation improves, people tend to notice it in ordinary ways first: sleep gets easier, digestion settles, energy becomes steadier, stress stops sticking around as long. Because you felt the exam findings yourself at the start, you have something concrete to compare against when we re-assess your NEI at set milestones.

I’ve said it to hundreds of families across East Tennessee — and I mean it every time: I’ve never once wished I could do less for a child’s nervous system. Only more.

If something in this post resonated with you — if you read it thinking about a specific little one in your life — that’s worth paying attention to. The nervous system is involved in everything: sleep, digestion, regulation, development, immunity.

If you’re in East Tennessee and ready to get a real look at what’s happening in your child’s nervous system — I’d love to be that next step for your family.
