What Is the Webster Technique?
If you've been researching chiropractic care during pregnancy, you've probably come across the Webster Technique. And if you're like most expectant mothers, the first question is practical: is this safe, and does it actually help? The answers are yes and yes. But the fuller answer goes deeper than most descriptions you'll find — because the Webster Technique isn't primarily a comfort measure. It's a neurological approach to one of the most significant physiological events the human body ever undergoes.
What the Webster Technique Actually Is
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment protocol developed by Dr. Larry Webster and now taught through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). It focuses on the sacrum — the triangular bone at the base of the spine — and the sacroiliac joints that connect the sacrum to the pelvis on each side. During pregnancy, the pelvis is one of the most dynamically changing structures in the body. Hormonal changes — specifically the release of relaxin — progressively loosen the ligamentous support of the pelvic joints to allow expansion for birth. This creates significant potential for the sacrum and sacroiliac joints to shift into dysfunctional positions that affect both structural alignment and the neurological function of the tissues they support.
The technique involves specific adjustments to correct sacral subluxation and associated soft tissue tension — particularly in the round ligaments of the uterus, which attach to the front of the uterus and run through the inguinal canal to the pelvis. Tension in these ligaments creates an asymmetric pull on the uterus that can constrain the space available for fetal positioning and movement.
What the Research Shows
A review published in the Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health examined 157 cases in which the Webster Technique was used during pregnancy in cases of breech presentation. The cases showed an 82% rate of successful reversion to vertex (head-down) position following Webster Technique care [1]. The technique doesn't directly manipulate the fetus — it restores pelvic balance and reduces uterine constraint, creating the environment in which the baby can move into an optimal position on its own. A 2014 study in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine found that prenatal chiropractic care including Webster Technique adjustments was associated with significant reductions in low back pain, pelvic pain, and reported discomfort during pregnancy [2].
The Nervous System Dimension Most People Miss
The sacrum is not just a structural bone. The sacral parasympathetic outflow — originating from sacral nerve roots S2 through S4 — provides parasympathetic innervation to the pelvic organs, including the uterus. Sacral subluxation doesn't just affect pelvic alignment. It affects the neurological environment of the uterus itself. When the nervous system supplying the uterus is under interference, the body's ability to regulate uterine function — including the coordination of uterine activity during labor — is compromised. This is one of the reasons prenatal chiropractic care has been associated not just with improved comfort but with smoother labor outcomes.
Expecting mothers across East Tennessee — in Knoxville, Maryville, and Morristown — are discovering that there is a way to support their body through pregnancy that goes beyond managing symptoms. When the nervous system and structural foundation are well-supported from the beginning, the experience of pregnancy often changes dramatically.
